Behind the result

How it works.

Working capital = current assets − current liabilities. Current ratio = assets ÷ liabilities. Quick ratio = (assets − inventory − prepayments) ÷ liabilities.

Know the assumptions

Enter values from the same balance-sheet date. Inventory and prepayments must be included in the current assets figure. Ratios do not prove that receivables are collectible or that cash will arrive before bills fall due.

A few useful answers

Common questions.

Does positive working capital mean I have enough cash?

Not necessarily. Current assets can include inventory and unpaid receivables. Check payment timing and cash availability separately.

What if current liabilities are zero?

Working capital can still be calculated, but current and quick ratios are undefined because their denominator is zero.
