Behind the result

How it works.

Contribution per unit = selling price − variable cost. Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ contribution, rounded up to whole units.

Know the assumptions

Assumes one product or a constant average sales mix, unchanged prices and monthly fixed costs. Use figures excluding recoverable GST. Financing, tax and capacity constraints are not modelled.

A few useful answers

Common questions.

What happens if my price is below variable cost?

There is no finite break-even point when contribution is zero or negative. Review price and variable costs before adding sales.

Why are units rounded up?

If the exact calculation is a fraction of a unit, selling the next whole unit is needed to fully cover costs.
